När San Francisco Giants betalar centerfieldern Bobby Rayburn (spelad av Wesley Snipes) 40 miljoner dollar för att leda laget till seger i World Series blir ingen gladare än hans största supporter, Gil Renard (spelad av Robert De Niro). Så när Rayburn plötsligt börjar spela sitt sämsta spel under hela sin karriär, skyr den besatte Renard inga medel för att hjälpa sin idol att komma tillbaka i gammal god form.
